📍 Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco, Brazil
Baía do Sancho is the crown jewel of Fernando de Noronha — a volcanic island archipelago off Brazil's coast that shelters one of the Atlantic's most biodiverse marine environments and one of the world's most photogenic beaches.
What makes Baía do Sancho extraordinary is the combination of dramatic volcanic cliffs framing a crescent of sand, water so clear you can see 50 meters down, and a resident population of spinner dolphins that swim through the bay daily. The beach is accessed by a dramatic staircase carved into the cliff face, adding to the sense of discovery.
The water visibility here is world-class — often exceeding 50 meters (150 feet) — making it one of the best snorkeling and diving destinations in the Atlantic. Sea turtles, rays, reef fish, and occasionally sharks are spotted year-round. The sunset views from the clifftop are equally spectacular, painting the volcanic formations in warm orange and pink tones.
The clifftop viewpoint above Baía do Sancho offers the most dramatic sunset shots. As the sun drops toward the Atlantic horizon, the volcanic cliffs and bay are bathed in warm golden light. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to claim a spot. Use a telephoto to compress the scene and isolate the bay.
The crystal-clear water makes for incredible underwater photography. A GoPro or waterproof camera captures sea turtles, rays, and the resident spinner dolphins that swim close to shore. Shoot during the morning hours when light is best and dolphins are most active near the bay entrance.
The staircase leading down to the beach is itself a photographic subject — carved into the volcanic rock with stunning views of the bay at each turn. Shoot looking down from the top or looking up from the bottom for different perspectives. Wide-angle captures the scale best.
A drone shot showing the full crescent of Baía do Sancho framed by volcanic cliffs is the definitive Instagram image of this beach. The contrast between the dark volcanic rocks, white sand, and electric blue water is unforgettable. Fly in the morning for the best light on the eastern-facing bay.

Resident spinner dolphins are a daily presence in the bay
September through March is the best time to visit Fernando de Noronha — the warmest water, calmest seas, and best visibility for snorkeling. December through February is peak breeding season for spinner dolphins, and sea turtle nesting season overlaps. The island has a daily visitor limit (400 visitors per day), so book accommodations and flights at least 3-6 months in advance for high season.
Fly into Fernando de Noronha Airport (FEN) from Recife (REC) or Natal (NAT) — both about 1 hour flight time. Flights are limited and often booked out during high season. There's a daily entry limit to the island (400 tourists), and visitors must pay an Environmental Preservation Fee. Book flights and accommodations together through the island's official tourism website to secure your slot.
Pousada Maravilha is the most iconic property — perched on the cliffside with panoramic bay views and an infinity pool. Pousada Zé Maria and Pousada Suestat offer more affordable options with great location near the beach. There are no chain hotels on the island — all pousadas (guesthouses) are independently owned. Book at least 4 months ahead for peak season.
Arrive early (8am) to beat the crowds — the beach gets busy by mid-morning. Wear water shoes for the rocky entry; the beach itself is soft sand. Snorkel gear is included with most pousadas or can be rented on the island. Reef-safe sunscreen is mandatory. The island has strict environmental rules — no touching dolphins, no feeding fish, no standing on coral. Drone use requires a permit.
