Manuel Antonio Beach

Where rainforest meets the Pacific

Manuel Antonio isn't just a beach — it's a wildlife sanctuary where the jungle literally spills onto the sand. Monkeys swing through the canopy overhead while sloths nap in nearby trees, and iguanas bask on volcanic rocks at the water's edge. This is Costa Rica's most visited national park, and for good reason.

🌿 A Beach in the Rainforest

What makes Manuel Antonio truly unique is its setting within a protected national park. The beach is framed by dense tropical rainforest on three sides, creating an intimate cove that feels worlds away from civilization. The contrast between the emerald jungle canopy and the turquoise Pacific creates a color palette found nowhere else on Earth.

The sand here is volcanic — a light gray that photographs beautifully against the deep greens of the forest and blues of the ocean. Three distinct beaches stretch along the coastline: Playa Espadilla Sur (the main beach), Playa Manuel Antonio (the most secluded), and Playa Espadilla Norte (just outside the park entrance).

🐒 Wildlife Encounters

Don't be surprised if a white-faced capuchin monkey tries to steal your snack. The wildlife here is remarkably habituated to human presence — though park rules strictly prohibit feeding animals. You'll likely spot three species of monkeys (howler, capuchin, and squirrel), two types of sloths (two-toed and three-toed), and countless iguanas, toucans, and scarlet macaws.

The best wildlife viewing happens early morning (7-9 AM) when animals are most active and crowds haven't arrived yet. Bring a telephoto lens — you'll want it for those sloth shots high in the canopy.

📸 Photography Tips

The iconic shot here is the "rainforest meets beach" composition — frame the beach through overhanging jungle branches for that perfect Instagram post. The Punta Catedral viewpoint offers panoramic shots of the coastline and the dramatic rocky outcrop that separates the beaches. For something different, capture the tide pools at low tide — they're filled with starfish, anemones, and small fish.

Underwater photography is excellent here too. The clear, calm waters are perfect for capturing tropical fish without needing dive gear. Just be aware — you're sharing the water with marine life including occasional reef sharks and rays.

🌊 Best Time to Visit

The dry season (December through April) offers the most reliable weather with clear skies and calm seas — perfect for those postcard-worthy shots. However, the green season (May through November) has its own magic: fewer tourists, lush vegetation, and afternoon thunderstorms that clear to spectacular sunsets. Wildlife is actually more active during the green season.

Arrive at the park entrance by 7 AM when gates open. Only 600 visitors are allowed in at a time, and the park often hits capacity by mid-morning, especially during peak season.
