Navagio Beach
Navagio Beach, more famously known as Shipwreck Beach, is one of the most photographed beaches in the Mediterranean and arguably the most iconic sight in Greece. This secluded cove on the northwest coast of Zakynthos features a dramatic shipwreck resting on pristine white sands, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and electric blue waters.
The shipwreck itself is the MV Panagiotis, a smuggler vessel that ran aground in 1980 during a storm while supposedly transporting contraband cigarettes. Today, its rusted skeleton has become an unlikely tourist attraction, creating a surreal contrast against the natural beauty of the cove. The beach is only accessible by boat, adding to its mystique and preserving its unspoiled character.
The view from the clifftop viewing platform is equally spectacular, offering a breathtaking aerial perspective of the entire bay. Visitors often BASE jump from the 200-meter cliffs, though this is highly dangerous and discouraged. The combination of the shipwreck story, the dramatic cliffs, and the impossibly turquoise waters makes Navagio a must-see destination for any traveler to Greece.
