Punta Sur is Cozumel's most dramatic natural landscape — a sweeping stretch of wild Caribbean coastline on the island's southern tip, encompassing a protected ecological sanctuary, a crocodile-filled lagoon, dramatic limestone cliffs, and some of the clearest water in the Mexican Caribbean.
Punta Sur sits at the southeastern tip of Cozumel Island, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. The area covers approximately 300 hectares and includes diverse ecosystems: coastal mangroves, coral reefs, lagoons, and forest. The iconic lighthouse at Celarain watches over the dramatic cliffs and the blowhole that shoots sea spray 30 feet high when conditions are right. The beach is part of a protected sanctuary managed by Flora y Fauna Mexico.
Punta Sur earns its rank for its raw natural beauty and ecological significance. The combination of dramatic cliff landscapes, a sheltered lagoon teeming with crocodiles, world-class diving at the reef drop-offs, and the iconic Celarain lighthouse creates a beach experience unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. The biodiversity here is exceptional — it's one of the few places in Mexico where you can see crocodiles in the wild from a safe viewing platform.
The lighthouse at Celarain is the signature shot — photograph it from the cliff top with the Caribbean stretched out behind. The blowhole is best during high tide when waves crash through the crevices. Arrive before 9 AM for golden light on the east-facing cliffs and minimal crowds.
